We usually do online hackathons due to their effectiveness. There are many online hackathons out there, but the ones with free registration will always stand out. Make sure this is highlighted, because most hackathons aren’t free.
Registration | 12 Days |
---|---|
Technical Meeting | 1 Day |
Hackathon | 21 Days |
After running a series of hackathons, we found this format to be the most effective. We also learned that giving them longer hackathons doesn’t necessarily lead to more submissions or better projects. Due to low commitment (since they don’t pay any fees), it’s better to keep things short before they shift focus to something else.
So if we put it by date for instance it would be something like this:
Registration | 1st - 12th of January |
---|---|
Technical Meeting | 13th of January |
Hackathon | 14th of January - 4th of February |
This is what we believe is the crucial part: rather than having them apply for the hackathon individually, they will team up from the start with the people they choose. So, from the beginning, the registration form we created consists of 3-5 people per team.
With this format, if 20 teams join the hackathon, that means at least 60 participants. Most will bring their friends or colleagues to form teams, spreading the word organically. However, some may not have anyone to team up with. In those cases, we direct them to our Hub’s Telegram group to find other individual teammates

You don’t want to put all the information on your promotional poster. We want to keep it as minimal as possible, because those interested in joining the hackathon will read the guidebook. Make sure the guidebook is accessible to everyone and easy to find.
